Our Hens

After six unexpected arrivals we now have 15 chickens.  Rosie our Rhodebar went missing in early July, presumed dead, however turned up several days later very hungry, she disappeared again only to return a whole week later, this time we managed to follow her and found her sitting on a clutch of 13 eggs.  We decided to leave her sitting and she hatched 6 chicks.  These chicks are now fully grown we have kept three hens (now called the triplets as they are very difficult to tell apart), two (Thelma & Louise) have gone to live across the road with Rita and Barry Preston and the cockerel has gone a little further up the road to another neighbour.

On 8th January 2012 we collected 6 Ex-Battery hens from a farm in Oswestry.  The hens were being distributed by the British Hen Welfare Trust.  These hens have their own house and run and will not be introduced to the rest of the girls until they are fully recovered.  We will keep you up to date on their progress.  For further information and photos click here.

Harriet with the lovely furry feet

All our hens are rare breed and came from the Wernlas Collection near Ludlow, sadly Wernlas closed down in September 2011 as the owners had been trying to retire for over two years!  Our hens typically lay between mid-February and mid-November - they like to have a rest during the Winter months!  The hens roam freely on the site.  Their eggs are delicious!

LACEY - is a blue-laced Wyandotte.  She has been at The Walkmill since February 2011.  She replaced our original blue-laced Wyandotte (Dotty) who sadly we lost last year.

BUFFY - is a Buff Orpington.  She has been at The Walkmill since February 2011 - she is a bossy girl and even though she has only been with us a short while is taking charge!  Sadly Buffy went missing in September, we found a few feathers so we don’t think she’s coming back which is very sad indeed.

MICHELLE- is a Buff Wyandotte.  She was hatched by Rita Preston and has been with us since October 2010.

HARRIET- is a Cochin.  She is one of our original hens coming to The Walkmill in January 2009.  You will notice her furry feet!  Harriet went missing the same day as Buffy, again we found a few feathers, again we don’t expect her back.

ELVEE- is a Golden-sparkled Appenzella.  She is one of our original hens coming to The Walkmill in January 2009.  She lays beautiful white eggs and has never gone broody!

BEE - is a light Sussex.  She is a recent addition only joining us in February 2011; she was chosen and named by George Henry Paxton.

ROSIE - is a Rhodebar.  She only joined us in February 2011 and has already produced 6 chicks!  She will be a very good layer.

RED - is a Rhode Island Red.  She has been with us about a year and is an excellent layer.

SALLY - is a Buff Sussex.  She is a recent addition only joining us in February 2011, and loves coming into the house!

"Thank you for your warm welcome, cake (scrummy!) and VERY fresh eggs! We've had a super time in your charming cottage, so beautifully fitted out, comfortable beds, clean, cosy, well equipped etc etc. This is going to take some beating. Stunning scenery on our walks, The Bog, Long Mynd, Stiperstones ... Great pubs, especially the Three Tuns at Bishops Castle, excellent beers! (Running out of superlatives). To top it all, perfect Spring weather. We'll be back."
